Sunday attends Orange Grove Preschool in Sydney where every year they have a concert in conjunction with the 'big' school kids in the Primary School.

The theme this year was a paradise/island feel, so I was able to donate for the costumes some of the Plain Pants for the preschool boys to wear on stage. Never have I seen so many pair worn in one group. Don't they look fantastic!

What great weather for bloomers! Harper wore her Big Blue Butterfly Bloomers teamed with a V-Neck in rich patchwork to a party today. They were great for all the crawling she did on the grass in the sunshine.

Lets hope the weather holds up! I'll be at the Bondi Markets tomorrow should the rain stay away.

Lost batik on a rainy day

In preparing and packing for a market stall at Bondi I found some of my batik pieces that I thought had sold out already - these baggy pants for starters... I also discovered a batik dress that I bought for myself that I completely forgot I had. Proof and testament to my hectic life.

Unfortunately, in the end there was no market stall set up today due to the rain and wind that is part of the ever unpredictable nature of Spring.

Leo Haks is a celebrated collector of historical photographs, among other things, who over a thirty year period amassed an astonishing collection of imagery taken throughout Indonesia by a number of photographers (many unknown) during the time of Dutch colonial rule. The National Gallery of Australia has been fortunate enough to become guardians of this collection - Leo donated his collection some time in 2007. Thanks Leo. I will certainly have to make the trip to Canberra to look at the beautiful pictures to see first hand the clothes being worn in their most traditional and celebrated fashion by children and adults. I love the baggy pants above, and the little girl in the image below is so beautiful. I'll also have to get my hands on a copy of the book Batik: From the Courts of Java and Sumatra as it features some of the photographs from the collection, and some good reading by the look of it. That should keep me occupied while I wait for the rest of my order......

I am still waiting for the rest of my order of children's Relax Shirts, Smoks and Easy Tops to arrive... sigh...

In the mean time I am dressing myself in the odd bit of batik - not so petit after all! A few months ago I rummaged through a suitcase of wares for sale at the Rozelle Markets and found a beautiful piece of 1960's batik right at the bottom of the pile. The seller tells me he'd bought it in 1971 when traveling in Indonesia. The remnant then became mine for the grand sum of $5. My year nine school Textiles and Design lessons have come in handy once again - I whipped up this dress in a few hours the other day (based on a Ginger & Smart dress my friend owns) and I will be baring my shoulders in it as soon as the warm weather returns.

I bought this OUCH skirt the other day and it works really well with the Smok Top.

I was going through some of the old posts on this blog and realized that this batik pattern

has not really been featured. This pattern is certainly one for the boys. It has Garuda wings all through it. I still have a few of these Relax shirts left in the other neutral brown batiks as well, and I will be dressing Sunday in hers on those hot days down on the beach - great to wear over bathers to keep the sun off. There is a nice little feature whereby the sleeves button up on the elbow.

Coming in new batiks soon too..... keep an eye out.

Frankie Little + Little Millie

I finally have some photos of my niece, Frankie, wearing one of the first tops Petit Batik made. We spent the day at Little Bay yesterday and it was un-seasonally warm - so much so that all the kids were splashing in the water. This particular batik pattern was so popular just about every style made in it sold straight away, although I did see a Halter dress on a hanger at Collector Store the other day...... I love the hints of colour throughout the patterning. Just lovely. I hope I can re-order in this batik soon.

I have some more of these tops coming in different batiks.

I have also managed to get some snaps of my other niece, Millie, wearing the Halter dress. This was another popular batik, so simple in its repetition. I love this dress. It's very feminine . Millie wore her Halter while holidaying in Hawaii - what better place to wear Petit Batik!

The last few days have just flown by since the shipment arrived (please don't get me started on the speed of last five months since Harper was born!). Cronulla is very lucky to have the beautiful children's clothing boutique, Char Bella on it's patch. It is so close to the waters edge you can almost hear the waves hit the sand as you walk in the door. I was fortunate enough to meet with the owner, Donna, earlier today and she has decided to stock some of the new range. As you can see above her order is wrapped and ready to go.

Have a look at the website for this lovely shop that was full of mums when I was there, all snapping up some beautiful items for their equally adorable kids. Donna has a fabulous eye and the shop is a delight.

Good ol' Michael McIntyre. Bless him. He has the best Vintage Clothing stall at the Rozelle Markets every Sunday and he has kindly offered to have a small selection of my Batiks on sale and going cheap before my next shipment arrives. Of course a trip to the Rozelle Markets is never complete unless I make a purchase myself, and today I found some lovely old bamboo hangers that I'll use to display the clothes at home and in the office for when I do showings. Not bad for $10, and way more interesting than the Ikea ones I have been using. We also bought an amazing vintage letter stamp kit - I'll be utilizing it soon to stamp some packaging. I will pop some pictures up soon.

So my Sally Browne designed business cards (cleverly disguised and doubling as the swing tags) arrived today, much to my excitement. It will be a manual and hands on affair for me over the next few days while I hole punch and thread up some 250 cards in readiness for the imminent arrival of my next clothing shipment. I can already tell that the little punched out bits are going to be a delight to capture and sweep. A job for Sunday, I suspect! Think of me, while I wheel away the hours listening to M.Craft or Fleetwood Mac..... fade out.

Charlie dress

It's great having friends with gorgeous kids willing to model my Petit Batik. As with the Martha Top, we now have the Charlie Dress. I wasn't sure whether this style of dress would work with the batik, but as you can see here this simple 50's style button front dress looks fab on the beautiful Charlie and from now on will be defined as the Charlie. I only do this dress in one size, it's about a 6. As with most of the styles, it will go from Summer to Winter really easily - pop a pair of woolen tights on ,and boots and a long sleeved top and it will look gorgeous on a chilly day.You've gotta love a trans-seasonal dress.
PS - by the time Charlie left our house she was covered in chalk paint and cat fur, not that you could see it -the batik has a fantastic knack for disguising kid mess.

Easy does it

Here she is, my little Harper in what is possibly the easiest piece of clothing ever, aptly named the Easy Top. Or is it a dress? Hmmm. The neck and arm areas are both elasticated, making getting dressed very, well, shall we say, easy.

There is a little bow attached to the front center, which is purely decorative. Harper is good at pulling it open. I'll be looking forward to dressing this up for winter with a long-sleeved top underneath and leggings below, as it quite spacious and flowy.

I'm quite annoyed with myself for not photographing my first shipment when it arrived. It was a great big box that once unpacked took up the entire office! It's hard to believe that this is all that is left from my original order of some 130 pieces. I gifted one of these little tops to 6 week old baby Martha earlier today, and I have decided to now call the piece the Martha Top. I'll post a photo of Martha donning her namesake item as soon as she's big enough to wear it - she's a teeny tiny little beauty. The Martha fits a 3mth old girl such as Harper below, with plenty of room to grow as it's baggy under the arms. It buttons all the way down the back, so it's quite easy to get on and off as well.

I popped in to the Collector Store today and was pleased to see my gorgeous Petit Batik Halter Dress being modelled by a mannequin. Tim found this gorgeous vintage hanger the other day. I love it. I'll be hanging my favourite pieces on it for show in Sunday and Harper's room from now on. For today it's the Easy Top - elastic neck and sleeve top that comes in one size only that can be worn as a big dress on a baby (Harper has one) and then fit them up to the age of about 2.

These are the basic Petit Batik pants that come in Small (1-2yrs), Medium (2-4 yrs) and Large (4-6yrs). They look good in just about every batik available, and are very easy for kids to wear with a plain T-shirt or jumper, on both girls and boys. With an elastic waistband - you can't go wrong.

Fisherman style baggy pants with a drawstring. These pants are a great for disguising nappies because the crutch is so low down! And they look fantastic on too.

This is how the Petit Batik fabrics are made. This small family run factory was amazing to see and really inspired me at the time, it was quite a privilege to see it. The smell of the wax was truly enticing, and the women making the fabrics were so laid back - they even let me have a turn. The entire process of making the batiks is very hands on, and the factories are small and only make about 40 meters of each design at one time. It's quite an organic process, there is no set order of what design will be made next as it's pretty much up to the women as to what design they feel like making at any one time. I don't mind this factor though, it makes it more interesting, and the clothes all the more unique.

I have enlisted the help of my dear friend Sally Browne, graphic designer extraordinaire at The Monkey's Cobbler to do my official branding for Petit Batik. This is a little idea I came up with one night while playing around with fabrics. I am waiting with great anticipation to see what Sal designs. Watch this space.

Halter Dress

Probably my favourite item in the range so far, this simple Halter Dress looks adorable on little girls (I'll try to photograph it on Sunday soon). The batik pattern is really gorgeous with the purple and gold hints throughout, and I wish I had ordered more items in it. The batik is not available at the moment and I will have to wait for it to be hand-printed again, which could be some time away!
